Paul, the world’s best known octopus which lives in an aquarium in Germany was declared favourite friend of the Spanish town of Carballino on Thursday during a small ceremony in Oberhausen.
The mayor of Carballino, Carlos Alberto Montes Marques told reporters that the octopus as something to eat was always a symbol of Carballino and what we needed was an octopus with a real name to represent a living symbol and then Paul came along.
The octopus made worldwide headlines during the World Cup when it correctly predicted the outcome of all Germany’s games and then forecast correctly that Spain would beat Netherlands in the final on July11.
Ever since, different zoos have been trying to buy Paul, there were concerns about his security and reporters of a foreign television station wanted Paul to predict a political event for their national audience which the octopus’ owners Sea Life denied.
Paul’s owners also repeatedly made clear that the octopus was not for sale. But mayor Montes was not deterred by his mission to take Paul home one day, dead or alive.
We will continue to try to buy Paul with the help of Pescamar company, not now, but later when he is no longer with us. They are currently building an octopus museum in Carballino. They would like to have Paul, Montes said.

You’re apparently never too old to pick up gonorrhoea in South Limburg: The title of this paper should about say it all: “Older and swinging; the need to identify hidden and emerging risk groups at STI clinics.” And yet there seems to be more to say. The paper’s findings are the result of years of careful record keeping, as the methods section notes: “At the STI clinic, South Limburg, The Netherlands, whether an attendee is a swinger has been systematically registered since 2007.” No surprise really that swingers pick up STDs at elevated rates—they constitute 12 percent of the clinic’s patients. The surprise, instead, is that the median age of its infected swingers is 43. (Disturbingly, that happens to be your fearless author’s current age).

A study that cries out for a control group with a teddy bear phobia: How does our brain manage to overcome deep-seated fears? Researchers took advantage of a clever procedure and functional MRI to find out. As they sat in an MRI scanner, subjects were asked to bring a stuffed toy bear into close proximity with their face. For the experimental condition, they were asked to move a live snake next to their face. The great thing about the procedure is that, by chance, a second control group appeared: those who succumbed to their fears and pushed the snake further away. All of these conditions showed distinct patterns of neural activity. No word on how the snake’s brain responded.  read more
