Well, things just got interesting. The very evening of the App Catalog’s launch of paid apps, Palm has made a very different kind of announcement: it’s going to let developers skip out on the App Catalog if they so choose. Devs will be able to submit an app to Palm, who will turn around and give them a URL for open distribution of the app over the web — without a review process getting in the way! The App Catalog will still exist for those who want to use it of course, with a $50 entrance fee to get an app inside — and we’re guessing it’ll remain the only way to distribute paid apps — but the new URL distribution should decentralize things just a little bit. In other good news, Palm will be dropping the $99 annual developer fee for folks building open source apps, and hopefully that free ride applies to App Catalog entry as well, though now there’s web distribution to make it less of a sticking point. Palm’s also going to open up its analytic data to developers, and even is giving away Pres and Touchstones to the audience members of the little shindig privy to this announcement — clearly the company is making a strong play for developers, and who doesn’t like to be loved?
[Thanks, Lawrence]

Ouch. If you’ve been waiting for another flare up in the old carrier wars, here you have it. Turning Apple’s “there’s an app for that” slogan on its ear, Verizon has introduced a campaign touting its network coverage. The ads — which highlight the company’s new tongue-in-cheek “there’s a map for that” catchphrase against tuneful, chirpy music — also boast that Verizon’s 3G blanket is a whopping five times the size of AT&T’s. Does this do anything to dispel the idea that Verizon and Apple may be getting together for that phantom tablet? Who knows, but it’s fun to watch the fireworks. Check out the full commercial after the break.

Rogers is losing its iPhone exclusivity in Canada next month, if a new report by The Globe and Mail is to be believed. Telus and Bell — traditionally CDMA-bound — have been prepping GSM networks of their own in a joint effort, and it sounds like they’ll be getting this off on the right foot with the iPhone 3GS as a launch device. Nothing’s official just yet, but those in the know expect an announcement tomorrow or Wednesday. Rogers isn’t the best-loved carrier in Canada, and a bit of choice never hurt anybody, so this seems like pretty good news all-round for our friendly northern neighbors

ISLAMABAD: Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan has said that the PPP government will not go even if parliament does not endorse the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
In an interview with Sohail Waraich of Geo News to be telecast today at 6:05pm, he said he could only become a prime minister if PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and the party nominated him.
He said it was wrong to give authority to the judiciary to fix the sugar price. “I have no big difference with President Zardari, however, there exists a difference of opinion between us,” Aitzaz added.
He said he was disturbed that the judiciary was restored with interference of the Army. He said the purpose of his meeting with the Army chief was not to plot against the government or take a pledge. “The chief justice has the veto power in the appointment of judges currently, but the method should be changed. The judiciary has not created any problem for the government, in fact, it blocked the way of military intervention,” he added.
The former SCBA chief said he was a well-wisher of the government and he could give good advices to the president, if he was invited. He said the independence of the judiciary would start bearing fruit in four years. He said the Army chief had invited him to play golf. Aitzaz said nobody could marginalise him in the party because workers loved him.

SRINAGAR: Chief Minister of held Kashmir Omar Abdullah said the army complete withdrawal of troops not possible.

“Held Kashmir is sharing borders with China and Pakistan, therefore, complete withdrawal of troops from bordering check posts is not possible,” Abdullah said while addressing a ‘Fauji Mela’ organised by the 25 Infantry Division in Rajouri.
Without pointing to any political party or organisation, he alleged that some vested elements were hell-bent upon creating an atmosphere of mistrust against Army and advocating revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and recalling army back to barracks.
It may be recalled that opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and separatists are demanding revocation of the AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) in Jammu and Kashmir and subsequent troops withdrawal from the state.
